If you have been experiencing moderate to severe symptoms for > 12 months:
You may need to be on the medication for 18-24 months to experience remission of symptoms. Once you start responding to the medication(s), then it is possible to slowly taper the medications to a lower dose and then discontinue.

If you have been experiencing mild to moderate symptoms for < 12 months:
You may need to be on the medication for 12 months to prevent any recurrence of symptoms.

However, every individual is different and it depends on the severity of your symptoms and how you respond on the medication. We have to consider any underlying medical issues, other medications you are currently taking (even herbs) etc.
